- Abstract
Razvan Caracas has been awarded the 2023 Dana Medal by the Mineralogical Society of America for his outstanding contributions to the field of mineralogical sciences. Caracas is a computational mineral physicist who has worked on a wide range of topics, including the composition of the Earth's core and the dynamics of Moon formation. His work involves using ab-initio calculations to solve complex problems in physics, and he has made significant contributions to understanding seismic transitions in the Earth's mantle and the properties of melts formed after giant impact events. Caracas is also known for his efforts to share his research with the scientific community and the general public, including the development of software and databases for material properties and the creation of an exhibition on Moon impact. He has published over 115 papers and is recognized for his ability to identify important problems, develop innovative approaches, and collaborate effectively with colleagues worldwide.
