- Abstract
Introduction: Degenerative changes of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) are evident on radiographic examination. The present study aims at assessing the radiographic degenerative changes of the condylar head in the panoramic radiograph. Literature reveals that osteoarthritis occurs in the second and fifth decades of life, whereas rheumatoid arthritis (RA) occurs in the fourth and fifth decades of life. In osteoarthritis, temporomandibular disorder is the first to be affected, whereas in RA, TMJ will be the last to be affected. The various degenerative changes that usually seen are flattening, thinning, erosion, osteophyte, reduced joint space, and altered shape of the condyles. Materials and Methods: The retrospective study of 45 panoramic radiographs of patients of the age between 20 and 45 years of age was selected. Result: The following degenerative changes of TMJ such as flattening, thinning, erosion, and osteophyte were evident. Conclusion: If early detection of radiographic degenerative changes of TMJ is done, early treatment planning can be done and thereby preventing the involvement of other joints.
