- Abstract
In 1917 at Fátima, the apparition of the "guardian angel of Portugal" usher in the series of apparitions of the Virgin Mary to the young shepherds. This article shows the role played by this adaptation of the biblical figure of the angel of nations in the long political History of Spain and Portugal. It stems to a great extent from the figure of saint Michaël, soon venerated in the North of Spain, but also from the guardian angel of communities, whose cult, born in Valencia at the end of the Middle Ages, spread throughout the peninsula in the early modern period. This spread is accompanied by the writing of apparition narratives which underline the angelic protection in front of the Muslims. In Portugal, these narratives allow to highlight the providential epic of Afonso i, the founder of the Kingdom in the 12th century, through the figure of the "guardian angel of the Kingdom" whose arm help him expel the invaders.
