- Abstract
The text analyzes the technological capabilities of the Río Santiago Shipyard (ARS) in Argentina from its creation in 1953 until 2014. The author identifies three stages in the company's evolution: its beginnings and initial productions (1953-1967), its period of growth (1968-1983), and its last stage of crisis and survival (1984-2014). Despite the ups and downs, the knowledge acquired throughout the projects allowed the shipyard staff to face the production challenges. Technological capabilities were developed in the naval and mechanical construction sectors, and workforce training was crucial. Production had to meet international standards and was subject to supervision. The diversification of production and the incorporation of specific machinery contributed to generating new capabilities. Knowledge was generated through "learning by doing" and "learning through use". The author of the text describes the evolution and formation of the technological capabilities of the Río Santiago Shipyard (ARS), a leading national shipbuilding company in Argentina. Initially, the office was composed of naval engineers from the Navy trained abroad, but later civil naval engineers trained locally were incorporated. Tacit knowledge was acquired through experience in shipbuilding, and the incorporation of computer technology in the seventies allowed for a reduction in design and calculation time. Staff training and investments in machinery improved technological capabilities, but the crisis and privatization led to a decrease in labor force and loss of capabilities. Despite this, the ARS was able to restart its activity and develop new vessels thanks to latent technological capabilities and the product engineering area. The demand for projects such as the construction of the Libertad frigate and the installation of the roof of the Ciudad de La Plata Unique Stadium demonstrated the changes in demand throughout the shipyard's history. In summary, the text highlights the importance of knowledge acquired through experience and the challenges faced by the ARS in its evolution.
