The author reflects on the survival of biological field stations and marine laboratories in the U.S. Topics discussed include National Research Council's report "Enhancing the Value and Sustainability of Field Stations and Marine Laboratories in the 21st Century" depicting affiliation of 75 percent of stations with universities, features of field stations such as bringing scholars and students together, and the United Nations' Food and Agricultural Organization's prediction on food production.
