- Abstract
The objective of this paper is to evaluate the real effects on the Catalan economy of the growth of uncertainty related to a series of political decisions that confronted the Governments of Catalonia and Spain, taking independence as an argument. In principle, the deterioration of certain economic indicators, including the GDP, is verified in the most critical phase of the process, which corresponds to the last quarter of 2017. However, employment has not shown a particularly negative behaviour in Catalonia compared to what happened in Spain as a whole. Furthermore, an econometric analysis with production data does not confirm a deterioration of the region's economic performance in a clear way. In consequence, it is not possible to conclude that the costs associated to the sovereignty process in Catalonia have been particularly important; and, in any case, we contribute estimations that show that their quantification will depend of the methodology and data used.
