- Abstract
Caulerpenyne is the main secondary metabolite synthesized by the Caulerpa green marine algae family (Ulvophyceae, Caulerpales). Caulerpenyne is a sesquiterpene containing a bis-enol acetate group, which is proposed to be the responsible of its biological actions. In an ecological context, caulerpenyne inhibits the microorganisms growth, interferes with the development of fertilized sea urchin eggs, and some of its degradation products reduce the palatability of the algae against herbivores, so that reducing grazing pressure by some fishes and invertebrates. Some of these Caulerpa species, such as the tropical alga C. taxifolia, are very invasive and have successfully invaded temperate waters on a global level in recent years. In contrast, C. taxifolia is poorly affected by herbivores of temperate waters, as a consequence of its chemical defence mediated by the major secondary metabolite caulerpenyne. In addition and in a clinical ambit, caulerpenyne has been found to exert some pharmacological actions, such as antidyslipidemic activity and antiproliferative effects via inhibiting the assembly of tubulin. Taking into account all these characteristics, the aim of the current work is reviewing the last knowledge related to caulerpenyne.
