- Abstract
The article presents the history of Native American diplomacy and power in the U.S. Midwest during the 18th century. It identifies direct colonization and the indirect flow of European goods as two ways of the incorporation of indigenous peoples into Atlantic networks of exchange and diplomacy. The influence of the delegation to France on cross-cultural diplomacy is discussed, as well as the advantages of a relationship with the French empire to Indian nations.
