- Abstract
The return of the Taliban to power in Kabul in the summer of 2021 marked the failure of an interventionist major project by the Western community of states. The Taliban's gender policy plays a central role in their concept of rule. The situation for women in Afghanistan is complex and characterized by experiences of violence, which are not only attributable to the Taliban. The Taliban's takeover represents a setback for the rights and opportunities for women, especially in urban centers. In rural areas, however, many women are relieved by the improved security situation. The question arises as to whether the Taliban will change their restrictive gender policy and what options for action will open up for women on the ground. In Iran, gender segregation has been an important political issue since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, but its concrete implementation is flexible and negotiable. The Taliban in Afghanistan are allowing controlled access to education and employment for girls and women. The survival strategies of Afghan women are diverse and dependent on various factors such as ethnicity, social background, and worldview. There are examples of women in rural areas creatively resisting the power of the Taliban.
