- Abstract
In this study, the relationship between the ability of middle school students to model processes with fractions and their attitudes towards mathematics were examined. The research was carried out with 6th and 7th grade students, randomly selected from 6 secondary schools and 6 imamhatip secondary schools, located in Kecioren District National Directorate of Education, Ankara province during 2016-2017 educational year. The number of students evaluated is 479. In this study, Personal Information Form developed by the researcher, Modeling Tests on Fractions and Math Attitude Scale developed by Aşkar (1986) were used. In the analysis of the data, SPSS 16 software was used. According to the results obtained from the research, it was found that there was a positive and moderately strong correlation between mathematics attitude and achievement score. Mathematical attitudes are significantly differentiating in accordance with grade, and the mathematical attitude of the 6th Grade is higher than the 7th Grade in positive direction. The mathematical attitude is also increasing positively as the first term mathematics grades and the duration of the course work increase. The attitude of mathematics shows a significant difference according to the belief that they will be successful in mathematics and the attitudes of those who believe that they will succeed are higher in positive direction. The achievement score is significantly different according to grade, and the achievement score of the 7th grade is higher than the 6th grade. As the first term mathematics grades score increases, the achievement score also increases. The achievement score shows a significant difference according to the belief that they will be successful in mathematics and the success scores of those who believe that they will be successful are higher. According to the results of the analysis, there was a moderate positive relationship between math attitude and achievement score (r = 0.34; p <0.05). Accordingly, a positive increase in mathematics attitude will also increase the achievement score. On the other hand, the increase in the achievement score depends on the math attitude of 11.00%.
