- Title
Confucian Frosting on a Christian Cake: The Translation of an American Primer in Meiji Japan.
- Authors
Nordeborg, Martin
- Abstract
An essay is presented on the translation of the American school book "Willson Reader," by Marcius Willson into the first Japanese language primary school reader, "Shōgaku Tokuhon" in 1873. It reveals that the reader was customary in the beginning of the Meiji period to do direct translation (chokuyaku) which is not tantamount to literal translation. It explores the implications of the morals in the Japanese translation to the Western culture and Christianity in Meiji Japan.
