- Abstract
The clinical efficacy of platelet transfusions is determined by a number of factors of which transfusion of a quality product is the most important. Routine quality control of platelets is essential for maintaining the quality of the component and also a licensing requirement for Blood Banks. The parameters tested during routine quality control of platelets as per DGHS guidelines are appearance, swirling, platelet count, volume of component, pH, WBC contamination and RBC contamination. During routine quality control testing some platelet units failed to meet quality requirements on one or more parameters. In the present study we have reviewed the quality control records over a period of two years from September 2004 to August 2006. One percent of the units were tested each month which amounted to testing of 10-14 units per month and quality control parameters were considered as met if 90% or more of the units confirmed to the requirements. Failure to meet quality requirements was documented on 5 instances in platelet counts, 5 instances in platelet volume, 2 units were found RBC contaminated and one unit was found to be culture positive. The corrective measure taken for low platelet counts was recalibration of the cryofuge to improve yields. In one instance the automated cell counter was found to be giving erroneously low platelet counts and on manual reconfirmation the platelet counts were found to be within QC parameters. The platelet volume variations were reduced by pasting a photocopy of the Blood Bag in use with levels for 60, 70, 80 and 90 m1 clearly marked (when bag was placed in the plasma expressor. Detailed trouble-shooting will be discussed in the presentation.
