- Abstract
The Lithuanian folk instrument kanklės is one of the strongest Lithuanian national symbols. The art of playing kanklės has been revived since the end of the 19th century till now. The history of this revival suggests a constantly changing image of the kanklės player. This article aims at analysing the development of this image from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 21st century and the rea-sons behind the different interpretations. A close analysis of interviews with kanklės players as well as popular and scholarly publications suggest that in the imagination of Lithuanian revivalists and the general public, the kanklės player was seen as a pagan priest, a sorcerer, a maiden Different images of the kanklės player and ways in which their meanings were communicated and expressed is a rich source of study of power and gender relations in society as well as of the shifting focus on collective or individual values, the changing sense of religious or spiritual attitudes and other aspects of Lithuanian social life.
