- Title
Social roles and long-term illness: is it time to rehabilitate convalescence?
- Authors
Wade, Derick T.
- Abstract
The article discusses the social roles within the expanded World Health Organization's Internal Classification of Functioning (WHO ICF) model of illness. The discordance between the assumptions of the biomedical model of illness and the reality of illness may lead people to enter into or remain within the sick role. The WHO ICF model of illness predicts that functional illness will occur, and it encourages a much broader view of factors that contribute to sickness.
