Abstract

Traditional medicine has remained a pillar component in healthcare systems of resource poor economies. Drugs like Prunus africana, Serenoa repens (Saw palmetto) and Saxifraga stolonifera etc.have been used traditionally and in modern medicines in the management of Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) .BPH is an age dependent condition that affects old men. The condition is associated with symptoms like frequency in urination, hesistancy, nocturia, weak urine stream and sexual dysfunction. Thus there is , need for update of the medications of the disease. To avoid these adverse effects People prefer to go for phytotherapy for the management of BPH so this review provides information of herbal drugs which act as 5AR inhibitors, these are the enzymes responsible for converting testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is important for the progression of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
