The article provides a historical background of anaesthesia in Japan. It reveals that the mainstay of medicine in Japan was the ancient Chinese school, by which all diseases were subscribed to an imbalance of temper, blood and water. The involvement of Seishu Hanaoka in the recreation of the potent oral anaesthetic with Chinese physician Houa T'o is discussed.
