US DOE completes shipments of Hanford fuel assemblies.
- Abstract
The article reports that the US Department of Energy (DOE) and contractor Fluor Hanford have completed eleven shipments of reactor fuel from the Hanford Site in Washington State to the Idaho National Laboratory. The US DOE, the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Washington Department of Ecology agreed that the shipment must be completed by the end of March 2009. The first shipment of fuel assemblies was conducted in October 2007 and the last shipment was sent to Idaho on April 30, 2008, making the work to be completed ahead of schedule. The shipment was conducted to prepare the facility in Hanford Site for long-term surveillance and maintenance after it was shut down in 1992.
