- Authors
Karskens, Grace
- Abstract
The article discusses the clothing of Aboriginal men in colonial New South Wales during the 19th century, focusing on the use of European military coats following the invasion of New South Wales 1788. The author analyzes various artistic representations of aborigines in European clothing, focusing on questions of cultural degeneration based on mimicry of European dress. She argues that the jackets were desired by Aboriginal men and thus the practice should not be interpreted as a sign of cultural loss. European jackets are discussed as status symbols for Aboriginal warriors, and special attention is paid to the dress of Bungaree, an Aboriginal leader and spokesman.
