- Title
So What's Truth Got to Do with It?
- Abstract
The article discusses Spanish conquistador and colonist Juan de Oñate, particularly examining his actions at Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico in 1598 and 1599. It comments on his sentencing of several Acoma Indians to be dismembered by having one foot cut off following a battle and the death of Maese de campo Juan de Zaldívar. The author considers historical views of Juan de Oñate within the framework of the Black Legend, a historical tradition which, some believe, exaggerates the cruelty of the Spanish and their treatment of Indians.
