- Abstract
The article analyzes the main character's bitter self-accusation of greed near the end of the poem "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" in the light of the concept of avarice for life as developed in a sermon by Augustine of Hippo in the 5th century. The author describes the deception, fear and avarice within the poem, explores the movement into immediate world of romance, and examines the Middle English designation for sin of avarice.
