- Abstract
Use of antimicrobial products is gaining significant importance in recent times. In the textile industry, these are mainly used for protective surgical apparel, newborn baby clothes and intimate apparel. In response to the growing demands for such produds many companies are offering products having antimicrobial properties. But many of these products retain the antimicrobial properties till 50-60 wash cycles, which may be sufficient for outerwear. But the life of intimate apparel as well as baby clothes is much beyond that. This is why the present study was undertaken to develop a method of application or renewal of antimicrobial finish, which can be incorporated as apart of normal laundry process of garments by an average consumer. During the study Sanitized-T, a Chitosan based antimicrobial finish has been applied on cotton lycra blend single jersey knitted fabric using exhaustion method. The efficacy of the finish has been tested using agar plate diffusion test against two gram positive and two gram negative bacteria. The finish was found to remain effective for fifteen wash cycles.
