- Abstract
The article "On the Old Celtic Name Amretoutus (CIL XIII 3991)" discusses the ancient Celtic name Amretoutus and its proposed variant *Amri-toutus. It refers to the traditional reading of *Amri-toutus and analyzes the unusual sequence of sounds at the beginning of the name. Xavier Delamarre and Jean-Claude Muller have proposed different interpretations of the name, which are questioned based on linguistic arguments. It is argued that the proposed meanings of the name are not sufficiently supported and that the names are likely related to the root *kᵘe̯r-, which means "to cut, carve" or "to make, shape." The text also addresses the naming of ethnic groups and tribes in different cultures and includes a bibliography with further references.
