- Abstract
In a recent article in the journal, published as of August 01, 1977, Orville F. Grimes Jr. and Gill C. Lim correctly point out that work has been done to systematically account for income differences among households in relation to the residential choice decision. Since this problem is particularly severe in low-income countries where many families can afford neither existing housing nor regular journeys to work, Grimes and Lim examine whether low-income families exhibit predictable locational preferences. The dependent variable was the proportion of low-income families in each zone and the independent variables were aggregate rent, distance, employment access, percent land zoned residential and a constant. The choice of functional form remains, as usual, a problem, with all the forms chosen performing well, though the multiplicative and logarithm forms perform better than the linear. In conclusion, though doubt may exist about the precise value of the parameters, the magnitude and direction is clearly established.
