- Abstract
Urbanization certainly has an important part to play in the process of economic development. Unfortunately, to the degree that it causes economic activity to concentrate in certain areas, it is one of the major causes of regional disparities in material welfare and growth potential. The focus of this article is on the role played by urbanization in the creation of these disparities. Also the question of how the process of urbanization can combine with various forms of dualism to interfere with economic expansion is discussed. The development of an urban-oriented way of life is dependent upon a change from subsistence to commercial agriculture. Without this, the division of labor necessary in an urban culture would be impossible. Even when this initial division of labor is attained there is no guarantee that economic growth will be achieved. Urbanization is a necessary but by no means a sufficient condition for economic development. Paradoxically, it is essential to the development of a sophisticated economy and yet it is at the root of one of the more severe problems besetting the developing nations the tendency towards regional inequalities.
