An Empirical Identification of Growth Centers.

- Abstract
A technique with a limited objective of isolating growth poles within distressed areas was developed. The dispersed nature of economic activity commonly associated with such regions offers a challenge to both theory and empirical analysis. The method was based upon analyses of employment structure and changes in the pattern of that structure. An index summarizes the relationship of one area relative to other areas and denotes its potential as a growth center. Both concentrated growth associated with cities and dispersed forms of growth were identified by the analysis. The empirical application yielded results which appeared reasonable upon examination, but procedures for evaluation of the method are not commonly accepted among researchers. Since the approach is subject to limitations discussed in this article, the results should be used in conjunction with other methods. Additional intensive studies of the growth delineated by this method should be made to evaluate more fully the potentialities of each center.
