- Abstract
In Switzerland, a recent development can be noted: schools also employ classroom assistants with the aim of supporting teachers in coping with heterogeneity. The focus of this article lies on the role of the teacher in relation to the assistant. Based on empirical research as well as on theoretical debates on the role of the professions, it is argued that the employment of classroom assistants bears risks, because assistants have not completed any pedagogical training. In order to meet the challenges that the lack of professionalism implies, the author suggests that teachers need professional training on how to best guide assistants and to train them on-the-job.
