- Abstract
The maternal-infant area requires a focus on its determinants to increase the strategic scope of its programs. An epidemiological, descriptive, correlational study was carried out with the objective of stratifying low birth weight (LBW) by Popular Councils (PC) according to social determinants associated with it, in the Guillermo Tejas Silva Polyclinic, in the period between 2014 and 2019 in the strata were defined according to the value of the mean of the index of low birth weight in this period. The sample consisted of 60 LBW births, which were related to some socio-demographic variables according to strata. When the results were processed, the absolute and relative frequencies were calculated, as well as the odd ratio (OR) with its lower and upper confidence limits for 95% and the chi-square, statistically significant differences were shown between the low and high risk strata where age under 20 years (OR=45. 64), low level of schooling (OR=14.68), single marital status (OR=6.53), housewives (OR=6.53), and arterial hypertension as the main cause of LBW in the high-risk stratum (OR=4.57). It was concluded that low birth weight continues to be a serious health problem in the Guillermo Tejas Silva Polyclinic, an issue that should be addressed from its determinants in order to carry out future interventions and achieve better results.
