- Abstract
For the past 15 years, Albanian immigrants in Greece have founded complementary schools providing courses in the ethnic language and culture. The present study focuses on a group of parents (n=18) whose children attend the Mother Tereza 'school' in Thessaloniki and aims at investigating their family language policies (Spolsky 2004; 2012). Results from this questionnaire survey suggest that although Greek has become the children's main vehicle for communication and dominant language in terms of competence, the practices adopted by parents to ensure Albanian language maintenance seem to have paid off; one observes quite satisfactory levels of ethnic language use and competence, especially in terms of literacy development.
