- Abstract
The book "The Europeans: Three Lives and the Birth of Cosmopolitan Culture" by Orlando Figes tells the cultural history of Europe in the 19th century through the lives of three interconnected individuals: opera singer Pauline Viardot, her husband Louis Viardot, and Russian writer Ivan Turgenev. These characters represent the formation of a European culture based on the enlightened ideals of reason, progress, and democracy. The author highlights Turgenev's ability to feel at home in different European cities, reflecting European cosmopolitanism. Although Figes' account has some limitations, his contribution reveals the roots of a European culture and identity through prominent figures and important cultural spaces.
