- Abstract
"Following the Ink" is an article that delves into the concept of zuihitsu, a Japanese literary form characterized by fragmented thoughts. The author, a woman of Japanese descent, reflects on her own experiences and her family's stories, particularly those of her grandparents who migrated from Japan to the United States. The article emphasizes the significance of preserving and passing down ideas and stories across generations. Using the zuihitsu form, the author explores her own thoughts and connections to her cultural heritage. The text also examines the impact of whiteness on nonwhite communities, which erodes their sense of self and necessitates a reevaluation of cultural norms and identity. The author shares personal anecdotes about her family's experiences, including the trauma endured by Japanese Americans during World War II and the challenges of assimilation. Additionally, the discovery of her grandmother's poetry serves as a link to her Japanese heritage and a source of belonging. The article underscores the importance of comprehending and safeguarding one's cultural history.
