- Abstract
This issue of Lighting Research and Technology focuses on the topic of lighting for pedestrians. The risks faced by pedestrians include the instability of walking on uneven surfaces, the potential for collisions with vehicles, and the possibility of criminal interactions. During the day, lighting is mainly used to make pedestrian crossings more visible, while at night, lighting plays a larger role in revealing the walking surface, making pedestrians visible to drivers, and providing a sense of safety. The current recommendations for pedestrian lighting may need to be reviewed due to advancements in vehicle types and changes in pedestrian behavior. Pedestrians can also increase their visibility by wearing high-reflectance clothing. Overall, appropriate lighting is important for pedestrian safety and should be considered in efforts to promote walking as a means of transportation.
