- Abstract
The article profiles Nelson Smith Jr., a Baptist leader from the mid-twentieth century to early twenty-first century. As a pastor, teacher, revivalist, and civic and social activist, Smith contributed to African American Baptist life and to the Birmingham, Alabama, community. Smith held several offices in the Progressive National Baptist Convention (PNBC). He further believed that the church should be involved in the total life of the community.
