- Authors
Burek, C.
- Abstract
Mary Anning (1799-1847) is the only historical female geologist widely recognized by the population at large, as Cynthia Burek and Bettie Higgs showed in I The role of women in the history and development of geology: an introduction i (2007). Chapter 1 contains an introduction to Lyme rocks, geological time, the great geologists of the period and the history of geology for non-geologists. Mary became an expert on the fossils she excavated, particularly fossil fish, and she realized that many of her specimens were new to science.
