- Abstract
There is little or no health provision for many villages on the Amazon river and its tributaries and the mortality rate is high, especially in children. The nearest hospital is six hours away by boat. Most deaths are caused by acute illness, malaria or waterborne infections such as parasites (mainly tapeworms from undercooked pork) or dysentery. In June 2007 I visited Peru to work as part of a medical team for The Vine Trust Amazon Hope Project. The project uses an ex-British navy ship, The Amazon Hope, equipped with an operating theatre, pharmacy and medicai staff, to visit the villages every three months.
