Taming Digital Hate: Lessons from the Israel-Hamas War.
- Authors

- Abstract
The Israel-Hamas war in Gaza has had significant implications for the Israel-Palestine conflict, with potential global repercussions. The conflict has led to a surge in divisive and inflammatory content on social media platforms, spreading beyond the immediate region and influencing public opinion. Media portrayals often polarize the conflict, and the ongoing Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories has garnered international attention and criticism. The conflict is seen as emblematic of larger ideological confrontations, and social media platforms have facilitated the rapid dissemination of information, often without context or verification. Hate speech targeting Arab, Palestinian, and Jewish communities has increased, leading to incidents of violence and abuse worldwide. The European Union has taken a proactive stance in regulating hate speech online, while the United States has been more conservative in its approach. Influencers and public figures have a significant role in shaping narratives and opinions, and social media companies must confront their responsibility in addressing hate speech. Legislative actions like the Digital Services Act are steps in the right direction, but more work is needed to foster a respectful and inclusive online community.
