Abstract
Cover: Animals that inhabit the ocean's deep water column comprise the largest and least known of Earth's major faunal groups. The vampire squid ( Vampyroteuthis infernalis) is an archaic cephalopod that lives deep within tropical and temperate oceans, worldwide. Its large eyes are maximized for effective vision in dark waters, and its behavior incorporates several distinct modes of bioluminescence.
