- Abstract
The article focuses on the regulations for Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 wherein schools built after June 3, 1977 must conform to the accessibility standards of the 504 regulations. The Barrier-Free School Facilities for Handicapped Students illustrates how to design or alter buildings to comply with the regulations. Plans for alterations to existing buildings must be submitted by December 3, 1977, and are to be completed by June of 1980. The report offers suggestions and blueprints for changes in parking lots, walks, ramps, stairs and rails, entrances and doors, elevators, and corridors. Also covered are suggestions about furniture, lighting, bathrooms, and display and work surfaces.
