COST REDUCTION, COMPETITION, AND INDUSTRY PERFORMANCE.
- Authors
Spence, Michael
- Abstract
The paper summarizes the relevant structural characteristics of the market and their impact on performance in various dimensions. The analysis aims to describe and evaluate the performance of markets with varying structures including concentration, spillovers and the technology of cost reduction. The paper indicates that there are structural environments in which actual performance is poor regardless of all levels of concentration and spillovers. The potential performance is significantly better with high spillovers.
