- Abstract
The article presents a population-based, observational study which examined risk characteristics of West Virginia state residents who died of unintentional pharmaceutical overdoses in 2006. The main outcome measures included associations between demographics and substance abuse indicators and evidence of pharmaceutical diversion. The prevalence of specific drugs among decedents was also evaluated. The study found that the majority of overdose deaths were associated with diversion and non medical use of pharmaceuticals. Overdose deaths were due primarily to opioid analgesics.
