- Abstract
Guadua lynnclarkiae and Guadua takahashiae, two new species of woody bamboos from Peru, are described and illustrated. Both species are known from northwestern Peru, in San Martin and Amazonas departments, growing at 400 to 850 m in elevation. Guadua lynnclarkiae is characterized by 40 to 50 cm long internodes in the middle portion of the culm, the bud of the nodal region conspicuously pubescent and ciliate, the culm leaf inner ligule arching in the middle (with or without oral setae), and falcate-lanceolate auricles marginally fimbriate at the summit of the foliage leaf sheath. Guadua takahashiae is distinguishable from its congeners by the following combination of characters: sparsely thorny branches, the internodes of the middle portion of the culm 20 to 34 cm long, the bud of the nodal region glabrescent, the culm leaf abaxially pink-brownish in color, the culm leaf inner ligule horizontal, and bearing fimbria at the summit of the foliage leaf sheath. Flowering is unknown for both taxa. These two new species are potential useful bamboos for local and regional development.
