- Abstract
The basis for research was two factors field experiment (split-plot design) conducted in the Experimental Station "Swojec" belonging to the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław. Five varying systems of conservation tillage were the main plot of experiment: 1) conventional tillage (the control treatment), 2) conservation tillage with the use of stubble catch crop (white mustard) left on the plot until spring, 3) chopped straw from previous crop with the use of cultivator and winter catch crops: 4) hairy vetch, 5) winter rye. Both winter catch crops were sprayed with non-selective herbicide and they served as mulch. The subplot of the experiment was nitrogen-potassium fertilization: 1 NK - optimum (N - 150 kg, K - 110 kg), 2/3 NK - lower by 1/3 (N - 100 kg, K - 73 kg). The use of conservation tillage with winter catch crops improved water properties of the soil as well as increased capillary porosity in comparison with conventional tillage. The lower rate of nitrogen and potassium significantly increased water reserves, decreased capillary porosity and capillary water capacity only during corn emergence in layer 5-10 cm. For the other layers and dates of research the effect of mineral fertilization on physical properties of the soil was not found.
