- Authors
AUGER, PETER
- Abstract
A literary criticism of the poem "Doomes-day," by William Alexander, first Earl of Stirling, is presented. It describes the work as a prominent example of a neglected poetic mode which could be regarded as early modern hexaemeral poetry. A comparison between "Doomes-day" and Guillaume de Saluste, Sieur Du Bartas' poem "Semaines" is given. Also discussed are the publication, and the literary and geographical context of the poem. The reading of the poem in relation to Alexander's style is described.
