- Abstract
The elements of the novel have been collected in the 80s from the living voice of the main character. The so called “wedding on horseback”, celebrated in the first half of the last century among the youth of two bordering villages in the Apennines, enables one to interpret the text of an ancient ballad. The definition derives from the bridal procession of knights that assembled after the religious function to accompany the young bride to the groom’s village. In proximity of the border, a playful pantomime was then taking place, in which the relatives of the groom would take control of the reins of the bride’s horse, to lead her triumphally to the wedding reception and to the community. The text of the ballad (Logiardo, Rinello, etc), collected in various localities particularly of central Italy, presents a dramatization of the “wedding on horseback”, for the mortal wounding of the young groom at the hand of the bride’s brother. Before dying, Logiardo asks his mother to proceed with the prearranged ceremonies, and therefore to welcome in the nuclear family the unfortunate young widow.”
