- Abstract
The article of the Summa devoted to the question of homicide in situation of auto-defense has traditionally been held the source of the socalled "doctrine of double effect", formulated by Catholic theologians and Magisterium. Nonetheless, since Vitoria and the Second Scholastics another reading has been promoted, in opposition to Cajetan's classic account who opposes effects that are intended and those that are only foreseen. This alternative reading, which has been recently revived by some commentators, suggests that, according to Aquinas, this is not a crucial distinction and that one may kill intentionnally when unjustly attacked. In the first part of this study, the arguments of those two readings are presented and discussed, finally defending the traditional "double effect" account. This account is itself subject to divergent versions, that can be ranked according to degrees of severity concerning the permission of foreseen effects. The second part studies those versions and attempts to a conciliatory solution.
