- Abstract
A 6-year-old male castrated English Bulldog was referred to the University of Illinois Small Animal Emergency Service for a suspected gallbladder mucocele. The dog had been experiencing symptoms such as anorexia, vomiting, and melena for three weeks. Blood tests revealed abnormalities in liver function, and an abdominal CT scan showed a mass in the gallbladder. Cytologic evaluation confirmed the presence of an epithelial neoplasm, likely a neuroendocrine carcinoma. The dog underwent a cholecystectomy, and the mass was found to be invasive. The presence of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Clostridium perfringens was also detected. The diagnosis of gallbladder neuroendocrine carcinoma (GB-NEC) was made based on the cytologic and histologic findings. GB-NEC is a rare condition in veterinary patients, and further research is needed to understand its clinical behavior.
