- Abstract
The article reports on the emergence of BGI, former Beijing Genomics Institute in China, as the largest next-generation genome sequencing center in the world after the purchase of 128 HiSeq 2000 genome sequencers from Illumina. Ilumina president Jay Flatley announced the deal at the 28th Annual J.P. Morgan Conference in California in January 2010. BGI is currently based at Hong Kong Science Park. The city's biotechnology sector is expected to benefit from the news. BGI is known for sequencing 1% of the genome for the International Human Genome Project.
