- Abstract
The article focuses on Japanese writer, educator, translator, and entrepreneur Yukichi Fukuzawa and the development of his thought on liberal philosophy, with particular emphasis given to his notion of independence. National independence, individual independence, French political scholar and historian Alexis de Tocqueville, and the Meiji Restoration are also mentioned.
