- Authors
Abraham, Lenore
- Abstract
The article discusses the role of 10th century poet Cynewulf's retelling of the legend of Saint Juliana as portrayed in the poem "Vitae Sanctae Julianae" in the Benedictine revival in England. The article describes how Cynewulf's recharacterization of the legend focused on teaching Christian principles for the lay and monastic audiences. It then discusses the themes of the relationship between the body and the soul, the doctrine of the Trinity and its function in the spiritual life, and the spirituality of Anglo-Saxon warfare. Other subjects under discussion include Cynewulf's use of the Latin language, the use of Cynewulf's poetry in Benedictine monasteries, and the character Eleusius.
