- Abstract
The author considers the teachings regarding self-will and own will in the Rule of Saint Benedict. The author considers how the meaning of the Latin term "propria voluntas" changes meaning in the Benedictine Rule depending on its context and usage. The article explores Benedict's teachings regarding an ideal form of monasticism, submission to God's will, acting with a sense of religious conviction, and using talents for the benefit of the order. The author also explores Benedictine philosophies of free will and self-determination.
