- Abstract
The article describes the narrative poem "Der Bussard" or "Der Busant," which originated in the 14th century. The story is about the love of an English prince for a French princess and includes motifs from courtly romances and Magelone poetry. Although the "Bussard" has not left behind a literary reception, there are connections to a textile workshop in Strasbourg, from which tapestries depicting scenes from the story have been preserved. The dating of the narrative is uncertain, but it is estimated to be from the 14th century or possibly earlier. The narrative poem is preserved in two complete manuscripts from the 15th century and a fragment from the 14th century. A new edition of the text replaces the previous edition by Friedrich Heinrich von der Hagen from 1850. The article describes the different editions of the medieval text "Bussard" and discusses the editorial decisions made in editing the text. The Tübingen edition only reproduces the oldest fragment of the text and documents the further transmission in an apparatus, while Könitz's individual edition presents the entire transmission in a synoptic representation. Könitz uses a standardized graphemic system, but reaches its limits when dialectal forms occur. The textual analysis suggests that the "Bussard" could have originated in the Alsace-Middle German border region. The article also criticizes some editorial decisions and asks about the criteria for improving the transmitted text. The present summary refers to a critical evaluation of the edition of the Middle High German verse romance "Der Bussard" by Christine Könitz. The author notes that the edition contains some unnecessary or incorrect emendations and that the editorial concept was not always consistently implemented. Various examples of these weaknesses are mentioned, such as incorrect translations, unclear sentence endings, and missing apparatus entries. Despite these shortcomings, the edition is praised as an important pioneering work that presents the romance in its complexity and represents a valuable resource for the study of Middle High German literature.
